About the author

Experience behind
every explanation.

Ian Wood's interest in racing began at about the age of eight, placing small bets for his father with the local street-corner bookie and watching the racing on television. His love of horseracing truly took hold in the 1970s at Ayr Racecourse, where he watched Roman Warrior's legendary Ayr Gold Cup victory. During a successful business career, Ian had horses in training, including one trained by Lester Piggott. He later bought Neardown Stables in Lambourn, took out his own trainer's licence and went on to train almost 250 winners over 12 years. DoubleHandful draws on that lifetime of enthusiasm and first-hand experience to explain the sport clearly.

Inside the guide

Racing explained,
simply.

DoubleHandful is the guide Ian Wood felt was missing from the sport: practical, accessible and designed to be returned to again and again.

From reading a racecard, the going and handicapping to ownership, betting terminology, horse behaviour, welfare and racing’s rules and appeals, it brings together the details that are rarely explained in one place.

Why I wrote DoubleHandful

“Racing is about far more than the two minutes a race may last.”
